When to cancel a free trial or renewal so you aren't charged

Cancel before the deadline, not on the renewal date. Here are Apple's and Google Play's trial rules, the services that end a trial the moment you cancel, notice periods, early charges, time zones and annual-plan fees.

How long before a free trial ends should I cancel?

On Apple, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends: Apple's terms ask for that notice if you want to unsubscribe before your payment method is charged. Apple also charges renewals up to 24 hours before a new period starts, so the same margin applies to every renewal. apple.com

On Google Play, cancel before the trial period expires; at its end the first billing period begins and you're charged automatically. Google says you'll get an email when a trial is about to end, and the platform steps are in Cancel subscriptions on iPhone, Android, Amazon, Roku and PayPal. support.google.com

Does cancelling a free trial end it right away?

It depends on the service, so check before you cancel early. Some keep the trial running to its last day, which makes cancelling on the first day safe; others end it the moment you cancel, so cancel close to the deadline instead.

Apple's terms add a catch: if you cancel a free trial of a subscription Apple itself provides, such as Apple Music, you can't reactivate the trial. The table shows what other services do. apple.com

How much notice do I need before a subscription renews?

Notice periods vary widely, and plans for teams usually ask for the most; How to cancel business software: admins, contracts, seats and data covers those. Cancel before the notice window opens, not on the renewal date, and allow for processing time where a service states one. Streaming and AI deadlines are in the table further down.

Why was I charged before my renewal date?

Some services charge, or hold money, ahead of the renewal date, while others send a reminder first. Check the payment date on the billing page, not only the expiry date.

  • Apple charges no more than 24 hours before a new subscription period starts. apple.com
  • Google Play may place an authorization hold on your payment method up to 48 hours before the next renewal period, or up to 5 days before if you're based in India or Brazil. Cancelling before the next billing cycle begins removes it. support.google.com

Which time zone does the cancel deadline use?

Not always yours. Canva bills on UTC, so depending on your time zone a charge, including the one at the end of a free trial, can appear a day earlier than you expect. Stackcut cancel guide: Canva

When a service names its clock, convert the deadline to your own time. When it doesn't, cancel a full day early.

Can I cancel an annual plan early, and what does it cost?

An annual plan costs less per month, but leaving mid-term can cost you. Some services charge a fee, some keep billing for the rest of the term, and some let the plan run out with no refund. Do these rules change by country or state?

Yes, and the official pages say so. Where you live can change the refund, the notice or whether cancelling ends access at once, so read the page for your country before you rely on a rule here.

Can I cancel a free trial as soon as I start it?

Don't count on one everywhere. Set your own reminder a few days before the deadline.

What if the renewal already went through?

Can I get the same free trial again after cancelling?

Often not. Apple's terms say a cancelled free trial of an Apple subscription can't be reactivated. apple.com

Do I have to cancel a subscription that came with a car or a phone plan?
