The short answer
- Cancel with whoever charges you. Apple's help says a subscription with no Apple receipt may be billed by another company, and your bank or card statement names it. support.apple.com
- Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription, as Google Play's own help points out. support.google.com
- Cancel before the deadline, not on the renewal date: ChatGPT Plus asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Stackcut cancel guide: ChatGPT Plus
- Save your data first: Zoom deletes cloud recordings 30 days after a paid plan ends. Stackcut cancel guide: Zoom
- Keep the proof. Netflix, for example, emails a confirmation to the address on the account. Stackcut cancel guide: Netflix
Who is billing me for this subscription?
Start with the charge, not the app. The name on your card statement, or the sender of the receipt, tells you who bills you: the service itself, Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, PayPal, or your phone or internet provider. Cancel with that biller, or wherever its help page sends you.
Cancelling somewhere else usually leaves the charge running. Everand (Scribd), for one, warns that cancelling on its website won't stop charges from an Apple subscription. Stackcut cancel guide: Everand (Scribd)
If you can't find a receipt from Apple, Apple says you might have bought the subscription from another company, and that your bank or credit card statement shows which company bills you. To find an Apple receipt, search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple". support.apple.com
- Roku: charges billed by Roku appear as "Roku", "Roku for ___" or "The Roku Channel". support.roku.com
- Tinder: an order number starting with MK means Apple bills you, GPA means Google Play, and TNDR means Tinder. Stackcut cancel guide: Tinder
- Netflix: no cancel option in your account means a payment partner bills you; look under Membership on the Account page for the partner's link or instructions. Stackcut cancel guide: Netflix
- Spotify: no option to change plan means a partner, such as your mobile or internet provider, bills you; its contact link is on your account page. Stackcut cancel guide: Spotify
- HBO Max: the top of the Subscription page names who bills you, and a missing cancel option means a partner does. Stackcut cancel guide: HBO Max
- Canva: the billing email or your bank statement shows whether Canva, Google, Apple or PayPal charged you. Stackcut cancel guide: Canva
Where do I cancel? The steps for each billing channel
Cancel in the place that bills you. The table shows where each kind of biller keeps its cancel option, with one service as an example; each service's cancel page lists every route it documents.
For the phone and TV platforms step by step, see Cancel subscriptions on iPhone, Android, Amazon, Roku and PayPal. Team and company plans usually need an admin and advance notice; see How to cancel business software: admins, contracts, seats and data.

How late can I cancel before a subscription renews?
The last safe day comes before the renewal date. Many services ask for notice and some charge ahead of the new period, so check the rule for yours and cancel before it. Trials, time zones and early charges are covered in When to cancel a free trial or renewal so you aren't charged.
Apple's terms say you will be charged no more than 24 hours before a new subscription period starts. For a free trial, Apple asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. apple.com
- Hulu: before 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the day before the term ends. Stackcut cancel guide: Hulu
- Nintendo Switch Online: turn off auto-renewal at least 48 hours before the membership expires. Stackcut cancel guide: Nintendo Switch Online
- Ancestry: monthly memberships at least 2 business days before the renewal date. Stackcut cancel guide: Ancestry
- Box: at least 3 business days before the renewal date. Stackcut cancel guide: Box

- Zoom: the terms ask for at least 30 calendar days before the next renewal term, unless your order form says otherwise. Stackcut cancel guide: Zoom
What should I save before I cancel?
Download what you want to keep before the final click. Some services hold your data for a while in case you come back, others delete it soon after the plan ends, and some exports take days to arrive. For the exports service by service, see Export your data before you cancel: files, photos, playlists, notes.
- Zoom: cloud recordings stay for 30 days after the paid plan ends, then are permanently deleted. Stackcut cancel guide: Zoom
- GoDaddy: after the subscription's end date, the product and all its data are deleted. Stackcut cancel guide: GoDaddy
- ChatGPT Plus: the data export can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. Stackcut cancel guide: ChatGPT Plus
- Netflix: a copy of your personal information can take up to 30 days after Netflix verifies the request. Stackcut cancel guide: Netflix
- Audible: Premium members lose unused credits when the membership ends, so spend them first. Stackcut cancel guide: Audible
- Adobe Creative Cloud: cloud storage drops to 5GB, and if you're over it you have 30 days to move files out. Stackcut cancel guide: Adobe Creative Cloud
How do I know the cancellation worked?
Don't stop at the button. Look for a confirmation email or a changed status on the billing page, and keep it until the renewal date has passed.
- Apple: if there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled. support.apple.com
- Google Play: a cancelled subscription offers Resubscribe in your subscriptions list. support.google.com
- Hulu: the Account page reads "Your subscription will be canceled." and a confirmation email goes to the address on file. Stackcut cancel guide: Hulu
- Dropbox: an email with the subject line "Dropbox Plan will not renew". Stackcut cancel guide: Dropbox
- Microsoft 365: a Turn on recurring billing link replaces Cancel, with the date the subscription expires. Stackcut cancel guide: Microsoft 365
- Everand (Scribd) paid with Venmo: no confirmation email, and the account may look active until the next billing date, but you won't be charged. Stackcut cancel guide: Everand (Scribd)
Still charged after cancelling? What to do
Check the charge date first. A charge dated before you cancelled, or inside the notice window, is the renewal you were too late for; a charge that keeps coming may be on a second account or from another biller.
For Apple, search your email for "receipt from Apple" and check which Apple Account paid. You can't cancel a family member's subscription, so ask the person whose Apple Account is on the receipt. support.apple.com
Cancelling doesn't refund anything by itself, as Calm points out. Ask the biller for a refund under its own policy, using the routes below. Stackcut cancel guide: Calm
- Apple: request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com and wait 24 to 48 hours for an update; eligibility can vary by country or region. support.apple.com
- Google Play: within 48 hours of a purchase you may be able to get a refund from Google; after that, contact the developer, who handles refunds under its own policies. support.google.com
- Roku gives no partial-term refunds. If charges continue after the billing cycle has ended, Roku points you to its steps for unrecognized charges and to Roku support. support.roku.com
- Microsoft 365: the most recent recurring charge can be refunded if you cancel within 30 days after that payment, once per Microsoft account per product. Stackcut cancel guide: Microsoft 365
- Uber One: if you cancel within 24 hours before the renewal day and the payment was already taken, Uber refunds it automatically. Stackcut cancel guide: Uber One
- LifeLock: each annual renewal can be refunded if you ask within 60 days of the charge. Stackcut cancel guide: LifeLock
Does deleting the app or my account cancel the subscription?
No. Removing the app, signing out or deleting the account leaves the billing where it was, and deleting first can make the plan harder to find. Cancel the plan, then delete the account if you want it gone.
- Google Play: when you uninstall an app, your subscription won't cancel. support.google.com
- Hulu: cancel before you request deletion of the account, or you may continue to be charged. Stackcut cancel guide: Hulu
- ESPN+: deleting the ESPN account does not cancel any ESPN subscription. Stackcut cancel guide: ESPN+
- ChatGPT Plus: deleting the account cancels plans billed directly by ChatGPT, not Apple App Store subscriptions. Stackcut cancel guide: ChatGPT Plus
- Bumble: deleting the account forfeits any remaining paid time, with no refund. Stackcut cancel guide: Bumble
Can I pause or pay less instead of cancelling?
If you'll be back, a pause or a cheaper plan keeps your account without the full price. The cancel flow may offer one before the final step; for those offers and how to decline them, see Retention offers when you cancel, and other ways to pay less.
- Netflix: Standard with ads is $8.99 a month in the US, against $19.99 for Standard. Stackcut cancel guide: Netflix
- Hulu: Hulu-billed subscribers may pause for up to 12 weeks; annual, gift card and promotional plans can't. Stackcut cancel guide: Hulu
- Sling TV: a standard pause lasts up to 6 months. Stackcut cancel guide: Sling TV
- Google Play: some apps let you pause payments, for 1 week to 3 months depending on the app. support.google.com
FAQ
Can I cancel a subscription that a family member pays for?
Not on Apple. You can't cancel a family member's subscription, so ask the person whose Apple Account appears on the receipt to cancel it. support.apple.com
Shared plans work the same way. On a Spotify Family or Duo plan, a member who follows the cancel steps only leaves the plan; the plan manager has to cancel it. Stackcut cancel guide: Spotify
Will I get money back for the rest of the month?
Usually not. Most services let you keep using what you paid for until the period ends instead of refunding the rest.
Netflix is typical: there are no refunds or credits for partially used periods, and you keep watching until the billing period ends. Netflix won't charge you again unless you restart. Stackcut cancel guide: Netflix
Google Play says past subscriptions can't be refunded, with some exceptions set out in its refund policies. You keep the subscription for the time you've already paid. support.google.com
Does asking for a refund cancel the subscription?

Some refunds do both at once. Everand (Scribd) notes that a refund issued through Google Play also cancels the subscription. Stackcut cancel guide: Everand (Scribd)
What if there's no cancel button?
Usually someone else bills you. discovery+ says a missing Cancel option means an app store or your TV package bills you. Stackcut cancel guide: discovery+
