Retention offers when you cancel, and other ways to pay less

A stay-with-us offer can be a real saving, or a new commitment at a price that goes back up. Here's how to judge one, and the documented ways to keep a subscription for less.

Sourced. Every number links the page it came from: the service's page in the Stackcut cancel library, or the company's or platform's own help page. Terms change and differ by country, so check the linked page before you rely on a date, a fee or a refund.

The short answer

  • A retention offer is a discount, pause or cheaper plan shown after you start cancelling. It isn't the cancellation: on Fubo, your subscription isn't cancelled while the discount screen is showing. Stackcut cancel guide: Fubo
  • Before you accept, check the price and how long it lasts, what it renews to, any new commitment, and the total over the same months.
  • Reported offers aren't promises. YouTube TV members reported a $10-a-month discount in the cancel flow in October 2025, but not everyone was offered it. Stackcut cancel guide: YouTube TV
  • Documented options are steadier: a pause, a cheaper or ad-supported plan, annual billing, or a student or assistance program.
  • Annual billing saves only if you stay long enough: Walmart+ is $98 a year or $12.95 a month, so annual comes out ahead from month 8. Stackcut cancel guide: Walmart+

What is a retention offer, and which services show one?

A retention offer is what a service shows after you start cancelling: a discount, a free pause, a cheaper plan, or a reminder instead of a cancellation. Some services describe these screens on their help pages. For others, the only evidence is users' reports, which are listed separately below.

Nothing is cancelled until you finish the flow. Read each screen and choose the button that continues the cancellation, not the one that keeps the plan. If you're not sure who bills you, start with How to cancel a subscription (2026): find who bills you first.

Retention offers users have reported

Some offers appear only in users' reports, not on the vendor's own pages. Stackcut's cancel pages keep them apart from documented options, mark them as reported, and note the month they were seen. Treat one as a sign an offer may exist, not as a price you're owed.

If no offer appears, nothing is lost. You can still cancel, or use one of the documented options in the sections below.

How to judge a retention offer before you accept

An offer saves money only if the total over the months you'll actually keep the service is lower. Check these points before you say yes; they're the same checks Stackcut's agent skill shows you when an offer appears. If you take the offer, put the date the price goes back up in your calendar and review it then; When to cancel a free trial or renewal so you aren't charged covers renewal timing.

  • The price, and for how long. Discounts usually last a set time: HBO Max's student price, for example, is $5.49 a month for up to 12 months. Stackcut cancel guide: HBO Max
  • What it renews to, and when. NordVPN's 1-year Basic plan costs $65.88 for the first 12 months, then renews at $139.08 a year. Stackcut cancel guide: NordVPN
  • Any new commitment: a new annual term, a prepayment, or different cancellation terms. Under Adobe Creative Cloud's US terms, cancelling an annual plan paid monthly after 14 days costs 50% of the remaining balance (in California, 30% of the annual commitment). Stackcut cancel guide: Adobe Creative Cloud
  • The comparison: the same months at the offer price, against cancelling now or a cheaper plan. Walmart+ costs $98 a year or $12.95 a month: 7 months billed monthly is $90.65 and 8 months is $103.60, so annual wins only if you'd stay at least 8 months, and Walmart says an annual membership can't be switched back to monthly. How to pause a subscription instead of cancelling

A pause stops payments for a set time, then restarts the plan on its own, so note the restart date. It fits a service you'll want back soon, such as a sports season or a busy month.

Pauses come with limits: many aren't offered on annual plans, promotions, or plans billed by Apple or Google Play. For store-billed plans, see Cancel subscriptions on iPhone, Android, Amazon, Roku and PayPal.

Switch to a cheaper or ad-supported plan

On Netflix, a cheaper plan starts on your next billing date and you keep the higher plan until then; YouTube TV switches right away. Check for a promotion first: Disney+ says you lose any current promotion or price hold when you move down.

If you pay for add-ons, remove those before touching the base plan: YouTube TV lets you drop add-on networks one by one instead of cancelling the whole membership. If the cheaper plan is a free one, save anything over its limits first, as Export your data before you cancel: files, photos, playlists, notes explains.

Is annual billing cheaper than monthly?

Per month, yes, for most services. But you usually pay for the year up front, and most annual plans aren't refunded if you leave early. It saves money only if you'd keep the service for most of the year, so run the same-months comparison above before you switch.

Student, low-income and military discounts

Many services document lower prices for students, people on assistance programs, the military or nonprofits. Most need verification, and many end after a set time or when you graduate, so check the end date as you would with any offer. For team plans, fewer seats is often the bigger saving: see How to cancel business software: admins, contracts, seats and data.

FAQ

Can I get a retention offer without starting to cancel?

Many documented options, such as a cheaper plan or annual billing, are in your account settings, so you can switch without cancelling. Some pauses, like Chegg's and Canva's, and the offers in a cancel flow appear only once you start cancelling.

Does starting the cancel flow cancel my subscription?

No. Fubo says that if you see its discount screen, your subscription isn't cancelled yet; you still have to click CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION. Stackcut cancel guide: Fubo

On SurveyMonkey, the last screen shows Keep my plan next to Done, and Keep my plan leaves auto-renew on. Stackcut cancel guide: SurveyMonkey

Will I lose my promotional price if I switch plans?

Often, yes. YouTube TV says you lose a promotional price when you switch plans. Stackcut cancel guide: YouTube TV

HBO Max says current promotions and discounts end when the new plan takes effect. Stackcut cancel guide: HBO Max

Is pausing better than cancelling?

If you'll want the service back soon, a pause saves signing up again; if not, cancel. When a YouTube TV pause ends, you're charged your normal monthly price, and that date becomes your new billing date. Stackcut cancel guide: YouTube TV

Are reported retention offers guaranteed?

No. They come from users' reports, not the vendor's pages, and YouTube TV members said the discount wasn't offered to everyone. Judge any offer you do see with the same checks. Stackcut cancel guide: YouTube TV

What if the offer comes with a new annual term?

Read that term's cancellation rules before you accept. On Adobe Creative Cloud's annual plan paid monthly, leaving after 14 days costs 50% of the remaining balance under the US terms, and other countries have their own terms. Stackcut cancel guide: Adobe Creative Cloud
