The short answer
- Where: Go to account.proton.me, sign in, and select any Proton service (account.proton.me).
- When it ends: The plan stays active until the end of the current billing period and does not renew; the account then moves to Proton Free.
- Contract notice: At least 30 days before renewal; with less notice the plan renews for another term and is cancelled at the end of that term. How to give notice
- Billed by someone else? Cancel with them instead: Apple or Google Play.
- Before you go: export Proton Mail emails and their metadata. What to save
- Want to keep it for less? Cheaper plan and more. Options
Before you cancel
Export first
- Proton Mail emails and their metadata: Download the Proton Mail Export Tool for Windows, macOS or Linux from Proton's support page and run the export; it's available on every plan (EML and JSON files, which email clients such as Thunderbird or Outlook can import). Emails only proton.me
- Proton Pass vault items: In the Pass web app, browser extension or Windows app, open Settings (gear icon), click the Export tab, choose a format and click Export (A ZIP with a PGP-encrypted JSON file, an unencrypted ZIP, or a CSV file). You can't export from the Proton Pass mobile apps proton.me
What happens to your data
Data stays, but an account over the Free limits is put in a restricted state; you have one year to fix it, after which all data is deleted from the apps where storage limits are exceeded. Free accounts inactive for 12 months may also be deleted.
What you lose
- Receiving new email (except from Proton), sending attachments and managing your calendar while over the Free storage limit
- Proton Drive sync, uploads and phone photo backup while over the limit
- Paid features such as extra addresses, custom domains and sub-users
- Premium VPN features after the renewal date
Cancel, by who bills you
Pick the route for whoever charges you: the name on your card statement or receipt tells you.

Keep it for less
Before cancelling, check whether one of these does the job. Offers change and differ by account.
- Cheaper plan Switch to a cheaper paid plan (Settings, All settings, Subscription, Compare all plans). Unused time becomes prorated account credit applied automatically to future payments; credits expire after 24 months proton.me proton.me
- Free plan Proton Free keeps one email address, up to 1 GB of Mail storage, up to 5 GB on Proton Drive and one VPN connection proton.me
For AI agents
- The person signs in and handles any two-factor code; an agent should never ask for a password.
- Retention step: After confirming Cancel subscription you must select a reason for canceling and click Submit; Proton VPN's guide says the cancellation isn't finalized until you do
- One Proton Account and subscription covers Mail, VPN, Pass and Drive: cancelling affects every Proton service on it
- Proton doesn't remove paid features or delete data for you: get under the Free limits (storage, sub-users) before downgrading to avoid the restricted state
- The 30-day refund applies once per user and only to purchases made directly from Proton
- App Store purchases are cancelled in iPhone Settings and refunded by Apple
- Deleting the Proton Account (Settings, All settings, Account and password, Delete account) permanently deletes data from every Proton service and can't be undone
Get this plan as data: get_exit_plan on the Stackcut MCP (stackcut.io/mcp), or /exits/proton.json. After using a guide, send structured report_guide_feedback for matching or changed steps, missing billing routes or human handoffs; keep unknown language and market omitted. Confirm with the person before the final click, and report the outcome with report_action_outcome, using the exact packet_revision and route_id returned by the plan.
Or give your agent the stackcut-leave skill (a zip): it exports first, walks the steps, stops when the page doesn't match, and leaves the final click to the person.
Delete your account (separate from cancelling)
Cancelling stops the payments; deleting removes the account and its data. Delete-account page (rated easy).
