The short answer
- Where: Click your profile icon and choose Account (or Account & billing).
- When it ends: The downgrade takes effect at the beginning of the next billing cycle.
- Before you go: export Emails (a CSV of regular emails with their HTML and TXT content), audiences (subscribed, unsubscribed, cleaned and transactional contacts), reports, email templates, content studio files, plus SMS, events, appointments and ecommerce data. What to save
- Want to keep it for less? Pause and more. Options
Before you cancel
Export first
- Emails (a CSV of regular emails with their HTML and TXT content), audiences (subscribed, unsubscribed, cleaned and transactional contacts), reports, email templates, content studio files, plus SMS, events, appointments and ecommerce data: Click your profile icon, then Account; open the Settings drop-down, choose Manage my data, tick each type of data, pick a time frame, and click Export Data (A single ZIP file, downloaded from the Manage my data page). One account export per 24 hours; a large export can take up to 24 hours. Deleting the account removes this data permanently, so export first mailchimp.com mailchimp.com
What happens to your data
Pausing keeps your data. Deleting removes all audience data, campaign archives and reports, and can't be undone; under the Terms, Mailchimp may permanently delete a terminated account and all its data.
What you lose
- After a downgrade: paid features, and any contacts, seats or audiences over the Free plan limits (you must delete them first)
- After deleting: audiences, campaign archives and reports, permanently
- After deleting: your username, which can't be used on a future account
Cancel, by who bills you
Pick the route for whoever charges you: the name on your card statement or receipt tells you.

For AI agents
- The person signs in and handles any two-factor code; an agent should never ask for a password.
- The paid-to-Free downgrade is allowed only once in the life of the account; pausing for 3 or 6 months is the reversible option
- Pausing or downgrading the Marketing plan doesn't end a Websites plan or other add-ons: check the billing estimate on the Monthly plans or credits page, and cancel a Websites plan separately in the account (it ends on the last day of the paid billing cycle)
- Only the Owner or an Admin can change billing or close the account
- Annual plans are closed through sales, not in the account settings
- Pay any outstanding balance before deleting, and export data first: deletion can't be undone
- Pay As You Go credits bought on or after May 15, 2019 expire 12 months after purchase
Get this plan as data: get_exit_plan on the Stackcut MCP (stackcut.io/mcp), or /exits/mailchimp.json. After using a guide, send structured report_guide_feedback for matching or changed steps, missing billing routes or human handoffs; keep unknown language and market omitted. Confirm with the person before the final click, and report the outcome with report_action_outcome, using the exact packet_revision and route_id returned by the plan.
Or give your agent the stackcut-leave skill (a zip): it exports first, walks the steps, stops when the page doesn't match, and leaves the final click to the person.
Delete your account (separate from cancelling)
Cancelling stops the payments; deleting removes the account and its data. Delete-account page (rated easy).
