How to cancel DigitalOcean

Billing is usage-based: destroy resources you no longer need (a powered-off Droplet still bills), or stop all billing by deactivating in My Account, Deactivate account. The final balance is still charged. Gotcha: snapshots bill monthly by size, backups and snapshots can't be downloaded, and there are no refunds.

The short answer

  • Where: Copy off anything you want to keep: backups and snapshots can't be downloaded, and DigitalOcean deletes content when the account closes (cloud.digitalocean.com).
  • When it ends: Deactivating stops billing and blocks new resources. You leave teams that have other owners; a team where you are the only member is deleted.
  • Before you go: export Files and data on your Droplets. What to save
  • Want to keep it for less? Free plan and more. Options

Before you cancel

Export first

  • Files and data on your Droplets: Copy what you need off each Droplet yourself before destroying it or closing the account. To keep a Droplet image on DigitalOcean instead, power it down and take a snapshot, or convert backups into snapshots. Backups and snapshots can't be downloaded. Weekly backups are kept four weeks and daily backups seven days; snapshots are kept until deleted and are billed by size digitalocean.com docs.digitalocean.com docs.digitalocean.com docs.digitalocean.com

What happens to your data

Without a purge, a deactivated account can be reactivated later with its history and resource limits. Purging deletes the account's email and billing information permanently. The Terms say DigitalOcean deletes your content on termination under its account closure practices and needn't make it available after closure.

What you lose

  • Destroyed Droplets, databases, Spaces buckets and clusters, and the data on them
  • Everything left on a deleted team: apps, volumes, registries, snapshots, domains, reserved IPs, load balancers, keys and tokens
  • With a purge: the account itself; using DigitalOcean again means a new account and verifying again

Cancel, by who bills you

Pick the route for whoever charges you: the name on your card statement or receipt tells you.

Deactivate the account

Online, self-serve A DigitalOcean account and the teams it belongs to, billed to a card or other payment method on the team. Who can cancel: The account holder; if you are the sole owner of a team with other members, delete that team or assign a different owner first.

  1. Copy off anything you want to keep: backups and snapshots can't be downloaded, and DigitalOcean deletes content when the account closes
  2. If you're the sole owner of a team that has other members, assign a different owner or delete the team; deleting a team means first destroying its Droplets, Spaces buckets, Managed Databases and Kubernetes clusters
  3. In the Control Panel, click the profile icon in the top right corner, then My AccountYou should see: the Deactivate account section
  4. Scroll to Deactivate account, click Deactivate, then click Deactivate AccountYou should see: Before You Deactivate, if you are still the sole owner of a team with other members
  5. If Before You Deactivate appears, complete the listed steps and click Refresh to see your progress, then deactivate. Tick Purge all of my account data only if you want the account removed for goodYou should see: the account reactivation page (or the login page, if you purged your data)
Confirm it worked
You land on the account reactivation page, or on the login page if you purged your data
Access ends
Deactivating stops billing and blocks new resources. You leave teams that have other owners; a team where you are the only member is deleted
Refunds
None: DigitalOcean doesn't offer refunds, and all fees paid are non-refundable. Contact support if there are extenuating circumstances
Fees
Fees still owed at termination are due immediately: each team's final balance is charged to its payment method, and the unpaid remainder of any committed-usage or reserved-capacity commitment is due as of the cancellation date

Delete a team

Online, self-serve A team you own (its own billing and payment method), when you want to keep your account. Who can cancel: A team owner.

  1. Destroy all Droplets, Spaces buckets, Managed Databases and Kubernetes clusters on the team
  2. Click the account drop-down in the top right of the control panel, click Switch Teams and pick the team
  3. Click Settings in the left menu, then Edit InformationYou should see: the Edit Team Profile window
  4. Click Delete team, then confirm by clicking Yes, Permanently Delete
Confirm it worked
Billers and owners on the team receive the receipt for the final charge
Access ends
The team is deleted at once, and its remaining resources (apps, volumes, registries, snapshots, domains, reserved IPs, load balancers and more) are destroyed. Members' own accounts are not deactivated
Refunds
None: DigitalOcean doesn't offer refunds
Fees
The team's payment method is charged for its final balance

Stop usage charges, keep the account

Online, self-serve Accounts or teams you keep open but want to stop paying for. Who can cancel: The account holder or team owner.

  1. Destroy each Droplet you no longer need: powering it off does not stop billing
  2. Delete the snapshots you don't need: they are billed by size every month while they exist
  3. Delete the other paid resources too, such as databases, Spaces buckets, Kubernetes clusters and apps
  4. Expect one more invoice: usage so far is charged on the first day of the next month
Access ends
Billing for a resource ends when it is destroyed; usage up to then is invoiced on the first day of the next month, or earlier if the balance reaches your tier's auto-charge amount
Refunds
None: DigitalOcean doesn't offer refunds

Keep it for less

Before cancelling, check whether one of these does the job. Offers change and differ by account.

  • Free plan App Platform hosts up to three static-site-only apps free, each with 1 GiB of outbound data docs.digitalocean.com
  • Discount program DigitalOcean Startups: credits (the amount varies by partner) and 15 months of free Standard support for startups that have raised $10m or less and have a company website and email digitalocean.com

For AI agents

  • The person signs in and handles any two-factor code; an agent should never ask for a password.
  • Powering off a Droplet does not stop billing: destroy it
  • Snapshots are billed per GB each month for as long as you keep them
  • You can't remove the team's default payment method, so removing a card is not a way to stop charges
  • Each team bills separately: destroy resources on, or delete, every team you own
  • Committed usage, reserved capacity and similar commitments are non-cancelable and non-reducible: the unpaid remainder is due as soon as you cancel
  • The Terms also let you cancel by contacting DigitalOcean support

Get this plan as data: get_exit_plan on the Stackcut MCP (stackcut.io/mcp), or /exits/digitalocean.json. After using a guide, send structured report_guide_feedback for matching or changed steps, missing billing routes or human handoffs; keep unknown language and market omitted. Confirm with the person before the final click, and report the outcome with report_action_outcome, using the exact packet_revision and route_id returned by the plan.

Or give your agent the stackcut-leave skill (a zip): it exports first, walks the steps, stops when the page doesn't match, and leaves the final click to the person.

Delete your account (separate from cancelling)

Cancelling stops the payments; deleting removes the account and its data. Delete-account page (rated easy).

Not confirmed yet

  • DigitalOcean's docs don't say whether a confirmation email is sent after you deactivate an account
  • Which other resources keep billing on an account you keep open (volumes, reserved IPs, load balancers, Spaces) is on each product's own pricing page and isn't covered here
  • How a committed-usage or reserved-capacity purchase ends isn't documented beyond the Terms: it can't be cancelled or reduced, and the unpaid remainder is due when you cancel
  • Moving a Droplet to a smaller, cheaper size isn't covered here; DigitalOcean's Droplet resize docs would describe it
